Hire Scheme

Are you thinking of taking up an instrument? Have you thought about hiring first? Hiring is a great “hassle free” option and our scheme has been especially designed for beginners.

Hiring can give you the opportunity to try out a violin, viola, cello or double bass without having to outlay too large an initial investment. If you do decide to buy an instrument from us we will offer you the first two months of the hire towards the cost of any instrument you wish to buy. The minimum hire period is 2 months, which turns into a monthly standing order after this time. As an added incentive, when you hire an instrument from us we will take responsibility for any repairs and maintenance, including the replacing of any broken strings!

This scheme is aimed at new starters so we hire out properly set-up entry level instruments. It is not a “Hire to Buy” scheme. We do sometimes have instruments for more advanced players available on short term loans (this is done on an individual basis so please enquire for details).

Please note: This is a hire scheme only, and is not a hire purchase scheme. The hire instruments are not for sale.

As you can imagine there is quite a high demand for this service so hiring is always subject to the availability of stock. Do phone up in advance to make sure we have stock available. For some instruments there may be a short waiting list.

Our current Hire prices per month are as follows;

  • Violin £15
  • Viola £18
  • Cello £30
  • Small Size Cello £25
  • Double Bass £40

Our instruments are properly set up and come with the appropriate bow, rosin, strings and case. We do not supply different strings i.e. upgrade the existing strings to better ones unless the customer is prepared to pay for this. We also do not supply a shoulder rest with the hire.

We will continue to take payment for the hire on a monthly basis until the instrument is returned and you cancel the Standing Order. Bank details will be required to set up the standing order. Please come into the shop, having checked with us the availability of the instrument, with proof of identity and all the bank details (account number, sort code, bank address).

The standing order may only be cancelled upon return of the instrument to the shop.

Please Note: We cannot cancel the standing order, only you can do this. The Violin Shop does not consider itself accountable for refunding money paid to it by people who have stopped hiring but failed to cancel their bank payments.
