| Part Exchange : Double Bass |
|
We offer a part exchange scheme on all double basses and bass bows previously purchased from Bristol Violin Shop (with the exception of instruments sold on commission). Honourable wear is acceptable whereas cracks, excessive varnish chips and similar damage will seriously devalue your instrument. Instruments can only be exchanged for more expensive instruments (i.e., better quality and/or larger size). No exchange is possible between different instruments (for example, from a cello to a double bass).
We offer 50% of the purchase price back, less the cost of any necessary repairs/refurbishment on:
We offer 60% of the purchase price back, less the cost of any necessary repairs/refurbishment on:
- All double basses and double bass outfits up to £1000
We offer the full purchase price back, less VAT at 17.5%, less the cost of any necessary repairs/refurbishment on:
- All double basses over £1000 (providing that the new purchase price is at least 50% above the previous purchase price).
This guarantee does not apply if we are taking an instrument in part exchange for one that is for sale on commission. Neither can we take a commission sale instrument back as they are private sales and not Shop instruments (unless previously agreed by one of the partners).
Very occasionally we can offer part exchange on an instrument that was not purchased at Bristol Violin Shop. This is generally only if it is handmade.
Please note that the guarantee is only offered to the instrument’s original purchaser. We cannot guarantee that an offer will be made to a customer who has bought one of our instruments from another vendor.
Please ensure that you retain your receipt: No part exchanges will be considered without production of the original receipt.
Please contact the shop for further details.

| Assisted Purchase Scheme |
|
The Scheme allows pupils who attend and have instrumental lessons at a state school to buy an instrument, bow and/or case for the retail price less VAT at 17.5%.
Only new instruments, bows and cases can be sold under this scheme. No part exchange can be involved in the purchase.
What you need to do:
- Take your chosen instrument from the Shop on approval ensuring that we know your child’s name, school or college and class.
- Take the approval form into your school or college and give it to the relevant person in accounts who then needs to give us an order number.
- We will invoice the school or local authority directly for the full amount. The school will then invoice you, less 17.5%, and then recover the VAT from the government.
We can only process a sale if we have written authorisation from the school or local authority. Please discuss this with your school or local authority music service in advance to help avoid delays or confusion. Any paperwork (including official orders) that we receive from them must include the following information:
- The school address, contact phone number and a contact name
- The instrument type and size
- The pupils name and contact number
Please contact the shop for further details.

| Tonal adjustments |
|
A large amount of workshop time goes into the tonal adjustment of instruments. The shape of the body and arching of the instrument are defining tonal features but a real tonal variation is possible through the way the instrument is set up. Among the variables are:
- Quality, fit, thickness and position of the sound post
- Quality, fit, thickness and position of the bridge
- Angle of neck and finger board
- Type and weight of tailpiece
- Type and tension of strings
We will be very happy to discuss set up and to make tonal adjustments to instruments. Please phone for an appointment.

| Approvals |
|
Our Approval system allows you to take instruments, bows or accessories away from the Shop to trial them in your own home.
We strongly encourage customers to take instruments and bows from the Shop on approval in order to facilitate difficult and complex decisions over purchasing. Hearing instruments in a variety of acoustics and over an extended period of time can help you to reach a decision which cannot always be made in the few hours spent in the Shop. You are welcome to take away up to two violins, cellos or basses and up to six bows on approval for a maximum of three weeks.
A small insurance fee is to be paid before items can leave the Shop.
If, during the approval period, you become unable to return the trial instruments or accessories by the date agreed on in the Shop, please let us know as soon as possible.
Please contact the Shop for further details.

| Valuations |
|
Written valuations are available for insurance purposes for a fee of £25 per instrument, including bow(s).
It may be necessary for you to leave the instrument(s) with us for a few days as time needs to be set aside for one of our experts to perform a thorough appraisal.
We would advise you to phone the Shop in advance if a valuation is required.
